Values In Action (VIA)

Encourages understanding and adoption of the Core Values of Caring, Respect,
Responsibility, Trust and Family by utilizing participative activities and projects administered
through after-school programs. VIA promotes teaching practices that create classroom communities
anchored in the Core Values so they become intentional in every aspect of life. The program
addresses specific social issues such as bullying/violence prevention, through customized
projects that engage and empower students to Make a Difference.

“VIA activities are effective. Students are having fun - and learning at the same time.”
- MPUSD After School Academy Staff

Making a Difference

Reinforces the Values in Action program with an interactive bullying/violence prevention
emphasis.
Making a Difference is a collaborative program that quickly evolved from a
middle school (grades 6-8) focus to include students in grade 5, as well as high school
students. Teens mentor younger students in the production of video and poster projects
that “market” various ways students can make their schools safer and more inclusive
by “Making a Difference”.

CHOICES

Encourages students to stay in school and pursue their education in order to expand
future career options. Business and community volunteers facilitate two one-hour
interactive, decision-making workshop sessions that take 8th or 9th grade students
through real-world exercises on academic self-discipline, time and money management,
and goal setting. CHOICES causes a shift in students’ understanding, attitudes and
motivation for learning. For some, CHOICES makes the difference between dropping
out and staying in school. For others, it conveys for the first time the relevance of
education to their future. Volunteers are welcome!

Lend A Hand

Creates a legacy of giving by acting as a conduit to connect youth to community
service opportunities and to provide guidelines for both volunteers and the
organizations they serve in order to maximize the experience for all.
